The 95 Theses was posted on Halloween by Martin Luther. Martin Luther believes: 1. people win salvation by faith in God's gift of forgiveness. 2. all church teachings should be clearly based on words of the Bible. 3. all people with faith are equal. people do not need to interpret the Bible for them. When Luther's ideas become popular, Pope Leo X issues a decree threatening Luther with excommunication unless he take's back his statements. Luther throws the decree into a bonfire infant of all his students. So, Pope Leo X excommunicates Luther. Charles V- holy devout Christian leader who wants Luther to recant. Luther refuses, so Charles orders Luther to be put "on trial" at the Diet of Worms. Diet (assembly) Worms (City in Germany). Luther says "my conscience is captive to the World." Luther and the Reformation The Church is weakened and vulnerable.  Socially: the Renaissance emphasis on the secular and the individual challenged church authority Politically: Some rulers mean to challenge the Church's political power Economically: Northern merchants resented paying church taxes to Rome  the Church now had corrupt leadership. Pope Alexander VI admitted that he fathered several children. Many priests and monks were poorly educated. Some priests drank to excess, money gambled.  the selling of indulgences "releases a sinner from performing the penalty a priest imposed for sins'' Johann Tetzel was a monk who sold indulgences to help rebuild st. Lutheran- Luther and his father formed this group 1d. protestant- applied to christians who belonged to non Catholic Churches 1e. Peace of Augsburg- a famous religious settlement where the prince decided the religion of his state 1f. Annul- means to set aside 1g. Anglican- the Church of England 3. Social- led people to question the Church     Economic- European princes and kings were jealous of the Church's wealth     political- powerful monarchs challenged the church as supreme power in europe 4. protestantism is a branch of Christianity. It developed out of the reformation and three were three branches. It spread throughout Europe and later the whole world.

today in class we took more notes on the powerpoint. Chiaroscueo- light and dark. Humanism- a deep interest in what people have already achieved, as well as what they are capable of achieving in the future. Secular- values that are worldly. DaVinci- Renisaance man- someone who could master fields of work. The Pieta- Michael Angelo in St. Peters Basillica in Vatican City. Frescos- when point on wet plaster. Vernacular- your own language (native)

Today in class we learned about the European renaissance. Northen Italy; cities were the center of the action. Milan and Florence had wealthy merchants and bankers. Artists in these cities were inspired by the former slender of classical Greece and Rome. The merchants dominated political life. The Medici were a powerful backing family. They paid artist, writers, and musicians to create beautiful works of art. They were patrons. The patron Isabella d'Este was educated and brilliant. She was a gifted singer, lute player, and an initiative dancer. She was wealthy and had powerful parents. She sponsored painters and musicians and writers. She was a fashionista and even designed her own perfume.
