The Civil War was fought in the United States between 1861 and 1865. Julius Caeser is was a military in 60 B.C. Triumvirate is a group of three rulers. Augustus is the exalted one. Pax Romana is known as Roman peace.  The growing discontent among the lower classes of society and a breakdown in military order. The main reasons were e fficient government and adequate rulers. The government took  provided free games, events, races, and, most importantly, gladiator battles.

1. The republic is  a government having a chief of state who is not a monarch and who in modern times is usually a president. Patrician is  a member of one of the original citizen families of ancient Rome. Plebeian is a member of the Roman Plebs. Tribune is  a Roman official under the monarchy and the republic with the function of protecting the plebeian citizen from arbitrary action by the patrician magistrates. Consul is  either of two annually elected chief magistrates of the Roman republic. Senate is  the supreme council of the ancient Roman republic and empire. Dictator is  a person granted absolute emergency power.  Legion  is  the principal unit of the Roman army comprising 3000 to 6000 foot soldiers with cavalry. Hannibal was a  Carthaginian general.  3. The Romans could only serve for one year, the same person could not be elected for ten years, and one consul could always overrule the others decision....

Rome Timeline: 509 B.C. - Rome becomes a republic.                            264 B.C. - First Punic War begins.                            218 B.C. - In the Second Punic War, Hannibal invades Italy.                            31 B.C. - Octavian defeats the forces of Anthony and Cleopatra.                            284 A.D. - Diocletian becomes emperor of Rome.                            476 A.D. - Western Roman Empire falls. Today Mr. Schick is not in school because he is out for awhile. We had a sub and it was kinda boring.

Hellenistic- a vibrant new culture formed by Alexander's policies     Alexandria- Egyptian city that became the foremost center of commerce and Hellenistic civilization.     Euclid- a highly regarded mathematician who taught in Alexandria.     Archimedes- from Syracuse, studied at Alexandria.     Colossus of Rhodes- a bronze statues that stood more than 100 feet high 3.  Since Alexandria contained a harbor, many boats and ships were traveling from around the world to trade. Because of this, Alexandria became an international community with a mixture of customs and traditions from Egypt. 4.  The astronomers, Eratosthenes and Aristarchus, used his geometry text that we still use today.  5. Stoicism and Epicureanism promote having social unity.

 Questions Page 145 1. King Philip II- dreamed of taking control of Greece and then moving against Persia to seize its vast wealth. In Macedonia, it is located just north of Greece, had rough terrain and a cold climate. Alexander the Great was Philip's son who proclaimed himself as King of Macedonia. He tamed a wild horse that none his father's groom men could at the age of 9 2. Darius III was the Persian king, which Alexander's victory at Granicus alarmed him. 3. Philip won the war because he trained his peasants into a well-trained professional army. He used his heavy phalanx formation to break through enemy lines. In 338 B.C., Philip won the war. 4. Alexander continued his campaign because he wanted to be the greatest at everything. 5. After Alexander died, his own people fought to be the leader of Macedonia. Eventually, Antigonus became the leader and a new, vibrant culture emerged.

Today we were gonna have a presentation from Dylan and Elpris, but Dylan was too scared, so we didn't. 1. A direct democracy is a form of government in which citizens rule directly and not through representatives. Classical art is the value of harmony, order, balance, and proportion which became the standard. A tragedy was a serious drama about common themes such as love, hate, war, or betrayal. It also deals with the downfall of a hero. They had a fatal flaw also called a hubris. Sophocles wrote a tragedy play Oedipus Rex. A comedy contained scenes filled with slapstick situations and crude humor. The Peloponnesian War was between two city-states, Athens and Sparta. A philosopher was a greek thinker meaning "lover of wisdom." Socrates was a critic that believed that absolute standards did exist for truth and justice. today in class, me, Alexa, Kate, and Ryan presented our project. it was actually pretty good and I think we did a very good job. we also listened to Quinn and Jacksons project on the olympics and sad and brysen's on greek food.
