Today we were gonna have a presentation from Dylan and Elpris, but Dylan was too scared, so we didn't.
1. A direct democracy is a form of government in which citizens rule directly and not through representatives. Classical art is the value of harmony, order, balance, and proportion which became the standard. A tragedy was a serious drama about common themes such as love, hate, war, or betrayal. It also deals with the downfall of a hero. They had a fatal flaw also called a hubris. Sophocles wrote a tragedy play Oedipus Rex. A comedy contained scenes filled with slapstick situations and crude humor. The Peloponnesian War was between two city-states, Athens and Sparta. A philosopher was a greek thinker meaning "lover of wisdom." Socrates was a critic that believed that absolute standards did exist for truth and justice. Aristotle was a philosopher who questioned the nature of the world and of human belief.

3. Pericles was a skillful politician, an inspiring speaker, and a respected general. He increased the number of public officials who were paid salaries. He then introduced a direct democracy for the people. This meant that the citizens could rule directly.

4. In the Peloponnesian war, Athens had the stronger navy and Sparta had the stronger war. Spartans marched over onto Athenian territory. They burned all of their food supply. The second year of the war, Athens was swept through with a giant plague, killing about 1/3 of their population, including Pericles. Sparta gained victory in the end.

5. Socrates wanted everybody to go farther and question themselves and their moral character. Some of the Athenians did not like this, so the jury killed him.
