The 95 Theses was posted on Halloween by Martin Luther. Martin Luther believes: 1. people win salvation by faith in God's gift of forgiveness. 2. all church teachings should be clearly based on words of the Bible. 3. all people with faith are equal. people do not need to interpret the Bible for them. When Luther's ideas become popular, Pope Leo X issues a decree threatening Luther with excommunication unless he take's back his statements. Luther throws the decree into a bonfire infant of all his students. So, Pope Leo X excommunicates Luther. Charles V- holy devout Christian leader who wants Luther to recant. Luther refuses, so Charles orders Luther to be put "on trial" at the Diet of Worms. Diet (assembly) Worms (City in Germany). Luther says "my conscience is captive to the World." Luther and the Reformation The Church is weakened and vulnerable.  Socially: the Renaissance emphasis on the secular and the individual challenged church authority Politically: Some rulers mean to challenge the Church's political power Economically: Northern merchants resented paying church taxes to Rome  the Church now had corrupt leadership. Pope Alexander VI admitted that he fathered several children. Many priests and monks were poorly educated. Lutheran- Luther and his father formed this group 1d. protestant- applied to christians who belonged to non Catholic Churches 1e. Peace of Augsburg- a famous religious settlement where the prince decided the religion of his state 1f. Annul- means to set aside 1g. Anglican- the Church of England 3. Social- led people to question the Church     Economic- European princes and kings were jealous of the Church's wealth     political- powerful monarchs challenged the church as supreme power in europe 4. protestantism is a branch of Christianity. It developed out of the reformation and three were three branches. It spread throughout Europe and later the whole world.

today in class we took more notes on the powerpoint. Chiaroscueo- light and dark. Humanism- a deep interest in what people have already achieved, as well as what they are capable of achieving in the future. Secular- values that are worldly. DaVinci- Renisaance man- someone who could master fields of work. The Pieta- Michael Angelo in St. Peters Basillica in Vatican City. Frescos- when point on wet plaster. Vernacular- your own language (native)

Today in class we learned about the European renaissance. Northen Italy; cities were the center of the action. Milan and Florence had wealthy merchants and bankers. Artists in these cities were inspired by the former slender of classical Greece and Rome. The merchants dominated political life. The Medici were a powerful backing family. They paid artist, writers, and musicians to create beautiful works of art. They were patrons. The patron Isabella d'Este was educated and brilliant. She was a gifted singer, lute player, and an initiative dancer. She was wealthy and had powerful parents. She sponsored painters and musicians and writers. She was a fashionista and even designed her own perfume.

1. a.  Renaissance means rebirth. b. Humanism is an intellectual movement that focused on human potential and achievements. c. Secular meant that you were worldly rather than spiritual and concerned with the here and now. d. Patrons had arts by financially supporting artists. e. Perspective was a way of painting that shows three dimensions on a flat surface. 3.  Renaissance men who excelled in many feilds was praised as a universal man. A young man should be charming, witty, well educated, know how to dance, sing, play music, and write poetry. He should also be a skilled rider, wrestler, and swordsman. Renaissance women were expected to know the classics and be charming. They were expected to inspire art but not create it. Today in class we took a test and I domino know how I did. I studied but I am not that confident that I did well. I am nervous to see what I got. It was hard and easy at the same time if that makes sense.

1. Greco-Roman culture was the mixing of the elements of Greek, Hellenistic, and Roman culture produced a new culture. Pompeii is where the best paintings are found in Rome. Virgil spent ten years  writing the most famous work of Latin literature. Tacitus was a roman historian who is notable among ancient historians. Aqueducts were designed by Roman engineers to bring water into cities. 5. The Latin started the language called the Romance languages which were the French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Romanian adopting Latin into three languages.

I think the United States is declining. Children are living in poverty. More than usual. Income is not as high. 1. Inflation is a drastic drop in the value of money coupled with a rise in prices. A mercenary is a foreign soldier who fought for money. Diocletian was a strong-willed army leader. Constantinople was the city of Constantine and with massive walls built around it. Attila was a powerful chieftain. 3.  Some of the main causes were inflation, decline of agriculture economy, growing population, loss of patriotism, economy fall, and the taxes were raised. 4. Diocletian fixed previous problems. He also doubled the size of the Roman army and split the empire in half and ruled the Eastern part. 5. The tribes were fleeing the Huns, who had moved into their land and destroyed everything. When they were trying to run from them, the Germanic people moved through the Roman provinces.

1. Jesus was Jew born in Nazareth. The apostles are 12 men who were Jesus's closest friends. Paul had enormous influence on Christianity's development. Diaspora is a dispersal of Jews. Constantine was Roman Empire who were fighting three rivals fro land. Bishop was a priest who supervised many churches. Peter traveled from Rome to Jerusalem and became the first bishop there. Pope was the father or head of the Christian Church. 3. Jesus emphasized in his early teachings Gods personal relationship to each human being. 4. The Christians refused to worship Roman Gods, which was seen as an opposition to Roman rule. 5. The Nicene Creed defined the basic beliefs of the Church.

The Etruscans settled Rome. The Greeks also settled Rome. The Greeks had many colonies around the Mediterranean Sea. The Latins originally settled in Rome first. Many of the streams flooded in the Tiber. The Punic war was fought between 264-146 BCE. There were three different ones fought. The farmers couldn't do anything so they moved to Rome. Julius Caesar lived Fromm 100-44 BCE and conquered the huge territory of Qual. Julius Caesar starts to rise in 60 B.C. Octavian forces the weak Lepidus to retire. After Octavian death, power was passed down to emperors. Caesar started a number of reforms. He only served one year as consul. He then appointed himself as governor of Qual. There was additional food and luxury items left for the wealthy. Rome was now going to be inheriting all of the grain, olive oil, metals, textiles, slaves, wine, and wild animals.
